Ideas on Handling Difficult People at Meetings

August 9th, 2005 · No Comments

All Extension Professionals moderate some sort of public meeting at one time or another. Sooner or later, each will run into a difficult person in the audience. So, how to handle these difficult people? From Joho the Blog comes this link to a discussion guide by Ashley Richards for moderators at the BlogHer Conference. Ashley notes (in the Joho post comments):

Thanks

for the plug, but I cannot take credit for the types of speakers that

go bad. Nick Morgan, in his book Harvard ManageMentor on Running a

Meeting (Jerry’s hyperlink), did the excellent job of defining them. The pdf on my site has

a list of references that I used when writing the guidelines.

Go to Ashley’s pdf. It is very good. Good, practical information for Extension Professionals on how to moderate meetings. Links like this pdf should be included in more Extension orientations for new employees. And updates for current employees. Maybe a good project for a joint HR project - a searchable database of links, articles and other resources.
