The NY Times has a pretty good article (subscription required) on how to start building up a supply of items for emergencies. Given the response time for New Orleans, I think the concept of having a 10 – 14 day supply of items is pretty logical. It seems smart to me to set a goal to build the required surplus into one’s grocery shopping and planning over the next 3-4 months.
